A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after she was swept away by a powerful current while trying to save her two sons. The incident occurred during a family snorkeling excursion near the southern tip of North Bimini. Local authorities have confirmed that the mother was pulled from the water but did not survive the ordeal.

According to the Royal Bahamas police force, the woman had been in the water with her husband and their two young boys. A strong current suddenly separated the boys from the adults. As the mother swam toward them to provide assistance, the same force that had carried the children also took her. The boys were eventually recovered from the water safely, but the mother was found unresponsive.

Police officers at the Alice Town station received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. reporting that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find that the woman had already been transported to the local clinic for emergency medical treatment. A local doctor examined her and pronounced her dead, despite the efforts of medical staff to revive her.

The preliminary account provided by police indicates that the woman was rescued from the sea and brought to the ferry dock where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered. The force has opened a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed to determine the precise medical cause of death. At this stage, investigators do not suspect foul play in the incident.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has acknowledged the death of its citizen. A spokesperson for the department stated that officials are in direct contact with local authorities in the Bahamas. The department noted that it is providing support to the family during this difficult time. The statement expressed the department's sympathy to the family of the deceased.

North Bimini is part of a small island group located between the large Andros island and the coast of Florida. This area is the closest part of the Bahamas to the US mainland. The islands are well known for their history, including their association with author Ernest Hemingway, and they host a prominent shark research center. The location is a popular destination for tourists and locals who enjoy water sports and marine exploration.

The investigation remains ongoing as police gather further evidence and witness statements. The family is now working with local officials to handle the next steps of the process. The case highlights the potential risks associated with strong tidal currents in the region, which can move quickly and with significant force. While the weather conditions at the time of the incident were not detailed in the initial statement, the strength of the current was a central factor in the sequence of events.
