Massachusetts voters will head to the polls on Tuesday to decide nine key races, including the governorship and U.S. Senate seats. The state is currently tied for the record for the number of major offices up for decision in a midterm cycle. Polling locations will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Voters in the Commonwealth do not have the option to vote at any location within their county. Each registered citizen is assigned a specific precinct and polling place based on their home address. When an individual registers to vote, the state mails a notice indicating the designated location. Voters who are uncertain of their assignment can use their residential address to locate the correct site.

Those who chose to vote by mail had until 5 p.m. on the fifth business day before the election to submit their application to local election officials. In the days preceding the vote, mail-in ballots were accepted at local election offices and early voting sites during standard voting hours. Voters who have already received their physical ballot can still drop it off before polls close.

A mail-in ballot must reach the local election office or a designated drop box by the time polls close on Election Day to be counted. Ballots postmarked on Election Day will also be tallied if they arrive within three days after the close of voting. However, voters cannot drop off a mail-in ballot at a polling place on Election Day itself. These ballots must be placed in a drop box, with the full list available on the Secretary of State's website.

The deadline to register to vote for this midterm election was Saturday, Oct. 24. Massachusetts law currently prohibits voters from registering on Election Day. This rule could change if Question 4 passes. Under that proposal, eligible citizens would be permitted to register to vote or update their registration address at their polling place on Election Day.
