Syrian families lost a member of their household this week when Israeli fire killed a man with special needs in Daraa province. The death triggered immediate public action as crowds took to the streets across the country on Friday to demand a response from the southern border.

State media reported large gatherings in the capital, Damascus, and the central city of Homs. In Daraa, an AFP correspondent observed hundreds of attendees waving national flags. Taysir al-Hariri, a protester on the ground, said the group aimed to "send a message to the world" that Syria stands united against incursions that threaten national security.

Marchers carried posters featuring the slogan "We are all Moaz," referring to the victim of the fatal strike. The name serves as a rallying cry for the disabled man whom Syrian officials say was killed during a recent military operation. Outside a United Nations building in Damascus, the family of a detained Syrian man joined the demonstrations. Children held up signs reading "I want my dad" to pressure for his release.

The military situation on the ground remains tense. Israeli forces advanced into part of Quneitra province on Friday, blocking several roads in the area. Troops bulldozed olive groves, established new checkpoints, and detained local residents. This activity follows hundreds of strikes and frequent incursions since the new government took power in December 2024 after the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

The Israeli military maintains a presence in a UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Golan Heights, a position held since 1974. Israel has stated it intends to keep troops in a designated security zone in southern Syria. The military seeks to establish a larger demilitarized area along the border.
