Latvia’s National Armed Forces recovered the wreckage of a drone in the Alūksne district on Saturday, October 24. The military announced the discovery after a six-day interval since the initial alert.
The incident began on October 18 when a noise resembling an explosion prompted a response from the National Armed Forces and the State Police. Investigators searched for a crash site but suspended the operation after two days. Officials determined that the available data was insufficient to identify the object or confirm the cause of the noise at that time.
The military now assesses that the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18. An investigation into the specific circumstances of the entry is underway. A separate internal review has launched to examine how the incident unfolded and the factors that contributed to the delay in recovery.
Authorities confirmed that no civilians were injured during the event. Civilian infrastructure sustained no damage, and officials have not identified any remaining threats in the region.
The find follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, debris from a suspected drone was located in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials stated the drone entered their airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the aircraft contained explosives. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures and expressed regret.
