Congressman Byron Donalds is projected to be the next governor of Florida. The Associated Press called the race Tuesday night based on the final tallies. Donalds captured 50.3% of the votes cast. His opponent, Democrat David Jolly, received 48.8% of the total. The margin of victory was 1.5 percentage points.

Donalds succeeds Governor Ron DeSantis in Tallahassee. He will be the first Black person to hold the office in the state. Bryan Avila, a former state senator, will serve as lieutenant governor alongside him. The new administration has pledged to continue the policy direction set by DeSantis while maintaining a distinct distance from the White House.

President Donald Trump played a central role in shaping the Republican primary. He endorsed Donalds more than a year before the general election. That endorsement helped consolidate the GOP field. It effectively limited the number of challengers Donalds faced on the ballot.

Donalds celebrated his win in Hollywood, Florida, on Tuesday evening. He took to social media to address the state’s voters. "I am humbled and grateful beyond measure," he wrote. "As your Governor, I will give you everything I have." He promised to lower costs and keep streets safe. He also vowed to invest in young people to help them achieve the Florida Dream.

During his victory speech, Donalds noted that he received two phone calls on election night. The first was from David Jolly, who conceded the race. The second call came from President Trump. Donalds outlined his immediate priorities, focusing on reducing insurance premiums and protecting the environment. He credited the daily work of his campaign for closing the gap in the final days.

"We have people who are looking at their bank accounts, not month in, month out, day in, day out trying to figure out how they’re going to make ends meet," Donalds said. "And my mission as Florida’s next governor is to make sure that they can build a great life here in the great state of Florida." He offered praise for Jolly during the address. Democrats saw strong turnout during early voting, but a surge of election day voters shifted the result to Donalds.

The inauguration is scheduled to follow the state’s standard transition timeline. Donalds will take the oath of office to begin his term as the 24th governor of Florida.
