Sophie Griffis will wake at 5:15 a.m. on most weekdays this fall. She reports to the pool for a morning session that ends at 6:45 a.m. She attends Strawberry Crest High School, where she competes on the school swim team. After school, she returns to the water for a second practice that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This double practice schedule occurs three days per week. She also swims for the Blue Wave club team year round.

Griffis, a senior at the Hillsborough County school, has swum competitively since she was eight years old. She identifies the 200 yard breaststroke as her favorite event. She notes that this distance is not part of the high school curriculum, so she only races it at club meets. She prefers this specific distance because it falls between sprint races and longer events.

Her most recent competitive milestone occurred at the Spring 2026 Area 3 Championship meet in St. Petersburg. She recorded personal best times in seven of her eight races. She described this weekend as a major victory because dropping even a single second in swimming represents a large performance gain. She viewed this meet as her greatest win despite the competition level being lower than some other events.

Griffis aims to swim the 100 yard backstroke in one minute or less this season. Achieving that time would qualify her for the state level competition. She recently competed at the District level meet and is now preparing for Regionals. She also sets a personal goal to become a stronger leader both inside and outside the pool.

She plans to continue swimming after high school graduation. She intends to compete on a college team or maintain her fitness through a club team at her university. She stated that she cannot imagine her life without swimming. She also serves at Grace City Church, a role that balances her athletic schedule. She spends her limited free time with family and friends, visiting the beach when the weather is warm, and shopping with her mother.

Griffis manages the physical and mental demands of the sport by focusing on lessons from each race. She acknowledges that not every race results in a personal best. She uses worship music to settle nerves before major meets. She often seeks a quiet spot on the pool deck to focus before each race. Her training routine requires her to be in the water more than many other athletes.
