Milwaukee Brewers fans in St. Petersburg, Florida, have their answer. After 58 seasons, the franchise owns a World Series title. The Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field to close the series in five games.
The victory resolves a long-standing debate about small-market viability in Major League Baseball. The Brewers held the 19th-highest payroll in the league as of August 31. The Rays ranked 25th. This marked the first World Series since 1991 to feature two teams from the bottom half of the payroll rankings.
Jacob Misiorowski, a 24-year-old two-time All-Star, took the loss from Game 4 and started on four days of rest. He threw 86 pitches, 58 of them strikes, and allowed only two hits. He finished with 5 2/3 scoreless innings before leaving the game with a right calf cramp. He pumped his fist after retiring Yandy Diaz in the fifth inning.
Cooper Pratt, a 22-year-old rookie who made his debut in June, set a Series record with six consecutive hits. He recorded two hits and two runs batted in for the winning team. Jackson Chourio set a five-game Series record with 11 hits. The team relied on contact hitting, scoring just 32.1% of its runs on home runs during the postseason.
William Contreras, the Series Most Valuable Player, hit an RBI double in the sixth inning. He joined Misiorowski on the mound for a standing ovation from the Brew-Crew section behind the dugout. Captain Christian Yelich told reporters the city had waited a long time for this moment. He expressed happiness about bringing the trophy home to celebrate with fans.
Manager Pat Murphy, 67, guided the team to its first championship. Murphy survived a heart attack in 2020 and won the National League Manager of the Year award in both 2024 and 2025. He described the 2026 roster as a group that prioritized winning over individual statistics. He noted that the team would be remembered for coming together.
The Rays had dropped to 0-3 in the World Series after losses in 2008 and 2020. They became the fifth team in history to lose Game 5 after falling behind 3-0. Only the Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers have lost more World Series in their first three appearances. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said his players were banged up but grateful for the way they carried themselves all season.
Owner Mark Attanasio addressed fans from the postgame stage, confirming Milwaukee had its world championship. The franchise began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Milwaukee in 1970. The previous Milwaukee championship came in 1957, won by the Braves before they relocated to Atlanta.
The Brewers finished the regular season with 103 wins, the best in the majors. They went 11-2 in the postseason, including seven comeback victories and a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. The team swept the Rays in the division series before losing the first game of the World Series.
A management lockout is likely to start on December 2. This could threaten the 2027 season as owners push for a salary cap to help small-market teams. The Brewers' success this year occurred during those contract negotiations.
The next scheduled event for the Brewers is the postgame celebration in Milwaukee. The team will travel back from St. Petersburg to begin the parade.
