Bam Adebayo secured his first victory of the season and a franchise milestone on Wednesday night in Atlanta. The Miami Heat defeated the Atlanta Hawks by a 12-point margin, snapping a five-game losing streak. In that win, Adebayo recorded nine rebounds to move past Udonis Haslem as the team’s all-time leader in that statistical category.
Haslem held the mark for more than a decade, accumulating 5,791 rebounds during his 20-year tenure with the organization. Adebayo now sits at 5,794 career rebounds. The shift in the record books occurred during the fourth quarter of the contest, marking a tangible change in the team's statistical hierarchy.
The center stood on the court in Atlanta as a member of the Heat staff presented him with the game ball. He acknowledged the weight of the moment in a televised postgame interview. "Man, I can’t really put it into words," Adebayo said. He noted the close relationship he shared with Haslem over ten years of professional play.
Haslem served as the team captain for many seasons before his retirement. Adebayo assumed the leadership role following that transition. The center also holds other high rankings in team history, placing second in scoring behind Dwyane Wade. He ranks third in assists and steals, and fifth in blocked shots.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra described the locker room atmosphere as special. He praised Adebayo's work ethic and physical toughness in the paint. "It was a really special moment in the locker room," Spoelstra said. He emphasized that breaking the record of a player he considered a brother was a distinct achievement.
Adebayo entered the league in 2017 after the Heat selected him with the 14th pick out of Kentucky. Only nine players in the NBA have collected more rebounds since the 2017-18 season began. The center credited his team and his faith for helping him leave a mark on the sport.
"I came into this league just wanting to make an impact, leave a mark," Adebayo said. He expressed gratitude to God and to the people who supported him throughout his career.
