Spanish police opened an investigation into potential involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday following the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel. The 30-year-old player suffered cardiac arrest after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second-division match on Monday.

The collision occurred near midfield during added time. Owono rushed from his goal area to challenge for a long ball, striking de Miguel in the chest. The match, which was tied 2-2, was abandoned after the incident. De Miguel was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The National Police confirmed the investigation began Tuesday, with prosecutors set to participate. Owono received a straight red card for the collision. He walked off the field before turning back to join other players checking on de Miguel.

De Miguel, a Madrid native who joined Tenerife last year, initially curled onto his knees and clutched his torso. He then fell onto his back. His professional career began in 2015 with Leganes B, and he has played for several lower-division clubs in Spain.

Tenerife released a statement describing the club as heartbroken. The statement read: 'There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this profound sense of sorrow.' Andorra, owned by former Barcelona star Gerard Pique, offered its condolences in a separate statement. The club said: 'We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his colleagues and friends, and to CD Tenerife. May he rest in peace.'

The Spanish soccer federation postponed two Copa del Rey matches and one Copa de la Reina match scheduled for Tuesday. Real Madrid players held a minute of silence during training, and Espanyol delayed the presentation of its new coach. Forward Kylian Mbappe posted on social media: 'So much sadness. There are no words.' English clubs Manchester United and Liverpool also issued condolences on social media.

Fatal collisions in soccer remain rare. In 2025, 19-year-old Colindres goalkeeper Raul Ramirez died from head injuries after two cardiorespiratory arrests during a fifth-division match. In 2001, Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun died from head injuries sustained during a collision while playing for CSKA Moscow.
