Jeffery Simmons entered the tunnel wearing orange sleeves and a new Chicago Bears uniform on Monday night. He immediately made his presence felt, recording a sack and a tackle for loss against the Seattle Seahawks. The Bears defeated Seattle 34-17 to improve their record to 6-2.
Simmons was acquired from Tennessee the previous week for a package that included two first-round picks. He finished the game with six tackles, three pressures, and a pass defensed. Coach Ben Johnson described the defensive impact as profound. Chicago held the Seahawks to 252 total yards and limited them to one third-down conversion on 11 attempts.
Caleb Williams completed 71% of his passes for 247 yards without turning the ball over. He was sacked once and set up three short touchdown runs by D'Andre Swift. Williams covered the logo on his cleats with black tape after receiving a fine of approximately $35,000 in the previous two weeks for displaying an unauthorized brand. He said he wanted to minimize media attention during a busy week.
The Seahawks, the defending champions, dropped to 4-4. The loss ended a 30-game streak where they did not lose by more than four points, a mark that ranks fourth longest in the Super Bowl era. Seattle struggled to move the ball on the ground, rushing for only 81 yards despite the return of Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price and the recent trade for guard Quenton Nelson.
Sam Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns for Seattle. An interception in the fourth quarter set up Swift's final touchdown, which extended the lead to 34-17 with 4:41 remaining. Seattle coach Mike Macdonald admitted the team was beaten, stating that they did not execute the necessary tasks to win while Chicago did.
The Bears established an early lead with a 17-play drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown pass to Luther Burden. They added two field goals in the first half. The Seahawks were held scoreless until Darnold threw a 43-yard pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 30 seconds left in the second quarter. A blocked field goal by Jason Myers in the fourth quarter hurt Seattle's momentum, though DeMarcus Lawrence forced a fumble by Colston Loveland to set up a touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp.
Injuries affected both rosters. Bears defensive linemen Grady Jarrett and Kenatvius Street left the game with groin and knee issues, respectively. Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams exited in the second half with a stinger and did not return. Chicago will host Tampa Bay on Sunday, while Seattle will host Arizona.
