Barcelona and Real Madrid are even at 106 wins each in a head-to-head record that spans 124 years. The two clubs will meet at Camp Nou on Sunday, October 25, in a La Liga fixture known as El Clasico. A result on the pitch will end the tie and give one side the statistical edge for the first time in the rivalry's history.
The competition began in 1902. Since then, the matches have featured players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and David Beckham. Current squads include Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid. The fixture draws millions of viewers globally due to its historical weight and star power.
One of the most recent high-scoring encounters occurred on April 23, 2017, at the Santiago Bernabeu. Barcelona won 3-2 in that La Liga match. Casemiro gave Real an early lead, but Messi equalized within five minutes. Ivan Rakitic put Barcelona ahead after the break, and Sergio Ramos was sent off for a challenge on Messi. James Rodriguez tied the score in the 85th minute, but Messi scored in stoppage time to secure the win and reach his 500th career goal for the club.
In 2009, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored twice, and Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also found the net. Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Ramos scored for the hosts. Barcelona won the league that season by nine points, a margin that reflected their dominance during that period.
The 2005 clash at the Bernabeu ended in a 4-2 victory for Real Madrid. Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Raul, and Michael Owen scored for the visitors. Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho were the scorers for Barcelona. Despite the loss, Barcelona finished the season as league champions, beating Real by three points.
A 3-3 draw at Camp Nou on March 10, 2007, featured a hat-trick by a 19-year-old Messi. He scored the first of his career in a match where Barcelona played with 10 men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real, and Sergio Ramos added a third goal. Messi equalized in the first minute of stoppage time. Both clubs finished the season with 76 points, and Real Madrid won the title on head-to-head record.
The final notable entry is the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011. Real Madrid won 1-0 in extra time after a goalless 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria to secure the goal. Di Maria was sent off with a second yellow card later in the match. The victory marked the first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid's first domestic cup since 1993.
