Tommy Glanville was driving his tractor near Rakaia late Thursday afternoon when he saw a tornado surging through a paddock. The storm system had brought thunder, lightning, and hail to parts of Canterbury, prompting a severe thunderstorm watch that remained active until the evening.

MetService classified the event as a small transient tornado based on available data. The agency had issued a warning earlier in the day that large, damaging hail exceeding 20mm in diameter could impact the region. Officials noted that such hail poses risks to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses, and vehicles, while also creating hazardous driving conditions.

Emergency services responded to multiple weather-related incidents across the region. Fire and Emergency New Zealand handled callouts for a hail-damaged roof in Southbridge and lightning strikes in Lincoln that sparked two small fires. These incidents occurred as the storm system moved through the South Island.

The National Emergency Management Agency issued specific guidance to residents before and during the storm. Advisers told people to shelter indoors away from windows and avoid standing under trees. They recommended securing loose items, clearing gutters, and moving vehicles under cover or away from trees to minimize damage.

Drivers were advised to slow down or stop if necessary. After the storm passed, the agency warned residents to watch for fallen power lines and trees. Officials also urged people to avoid streams and drains due to the potential for flash flooding.
