Franky Paba, 64, and Denis Del Carmen Polo Fuentes, 57, were found dead inside a senior housing apartment in northeast Miami-Dade on Wednesday evening. Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) agents responded to a reported shooting near the intersection of 14th Avenue and 171st Street at approximately 7 p.m.
Investigators state that Fuentes entered the residence to retrieve her personal belongings. MDSO officials said Paba allowed her inside the unit. Once inside, he drew a firearm and shot Fuentes. After the initial shooting, Paba took his own life.
The sheriff's office has identified both victims but has not officially confirmed the nature of their relationship. Yolima Paba, identified as Franky Paba's sister, told reporters the couple had been separated for roughly two months. She described them as a pair facing difficult times.
"More than anything, I have no words to say," Yolima Paba said. She added that the family was trying to process a tragedy they never anticipated. "Something strong because I did not expect this, and the truth is they had been separated for two months, but I did not think the ending would be so tragic," she said.
A neighbor familiar with the situation noted that Fuentes had lived in the apartment for years before recently moving out. The neighbor explained that Paba had traveled to Colombia for an extended period due to his mother's hospitalization. During that time, the relationship deteriorated, prompting Fuentes to leave the complex.
MDSO spokesperson details indicate that the return visit to collect items triggered the final confrontation. "The subject let the victim enter the residence. He armed himself with a firearm, began shooting the victim, and then shot himself," the spokesperson said.
The incident occurred in a complex designed for residents aged 55 and older. No other injuries were reported at the scene.
