Approximately 7,000 to 8,000 units of the Cybertruck were delivered in the third quarter of 2026, a figure that highlights the scaling challenges facing Tesla’s most unconventional vehicle. This low volume has forced the company to abandon its plans for the Australian and New Zealand markets, a decision that ends a nearly seven year waiting period for local reservation holders. The announcement arrived via email this morning, informing customers that their orders are void and that their deposits will be returned in full within 30 days.

The core obstacle has always been the vehicle’s orientation. The Cybertruck is manufactured exclusively as a left hand drive model, while Australia and New Zealand require right hand drive configurations. Bringing the truck to these markets would have required extensive re engineering and certification under local design rules. Given the current production rates, the investment proved difficult to justify. Tesla’s international strategy has instead focused on left hand drive regions, with recent deliveries in South Korea, the UAE, and the Middle East, while the vehicle remains blocked in the EU by pedestrian safety regulations.

The timeline for these customers has been marked by delays and shifting promises. Deposits of A$150 were collected starting in November 2019. By May 2022, Tesla quietly removed the reservation page for the region, replacing it with an update button, but did not issue refunds at that time. In 2024, the CEO told shareholders that certification for other markets might happen the following year. That year passed without a right hand drive version, and now the reservation page has been permanently closed.

To soften the blow, Tesla is offering a free one year subscription to its FSD supervised mode for those who order a Model 3 or Model Y. This incentive suggests the company is actively trying to convert dead pickup reservations into sales of its mainstream right hand drive sedans and SUVs. The emails were sent just one day after Tesla reported its Q3 2026 earnings, a timing that underscores the direct link between current sales data and strategic decisions.

Contextualizing the move, crowdsourced data from 2020 placed Australia as the third largest reservation hub, behind the US and Canada. While Tesla has never confirmed regional numbers, global reservations peaked at roughly two million. The US market saw sales collapse from about 39,000 units in 2024 to a much lower fraction today. With the Model S and X production lines ended, the Cybertruck now makes up the vast majority of the 'Other Models' category. For a vehicle built on a line capable of 250,000 units annually, the current pace of roughly 30,000 per year suggests a niche product that may struggle to support further international expansion.
