The film industry in Northern Ireland is receiving a high-profile boost as Jamie Dornan steps into a leadership role for a locally produced drama. Dornan, known for his work in Belfast and Fifty Shades of Grey, has joined the short film Nostalgie as an executive producer. The film is directed by Kathryn Ferguson and is currently positioning itself for a spot in the best live action short film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Nostalgie is a darkly comic drama that explores the dynamic between musicians and their audiences. It stars Aidan Gillen as Drew Lord Haig, a former 1980s pop star who is invited to perform at a centenary celebration in Belfast. The plot centers on Haig discovering that one of his forgotten songs has become an anthem with a meaning he did not anticipate. The film features original songs and a score by Dan Smith of Bastille, with cinematography by Robbie Ryan.
Dornan cited the project’s local roots as the primary reason for his involvement. He noted that he actively monitors productions being filmed in his home city. He stated that the opportunity to work alongside a largely Belfast-born team made the decision straightforward. The film is adapted from a short story by Belfast author Wendy Erskine.
The actor praised Ferguson for balancing specific regional themes with universal storytelling. He said she captured the complex social and political environment of Northern Ireland while keeping the narrative relatable. He described achieving that balance as a difficult feat that demonstrates her vision as a storyteller.
The cast includes Michael Smiley, Jessica Reynolds, Seamus O’Hara, and Sean Kearns. The screenplay was written by Stacey Gregg. The production team includes Kath Mattock, Marie-Thérèse Mackle, and Marc Robinson. Globe Originals presents the film in association with Hopefield and Film4, while Stille Productions and Tara Films serve as the production companies.
Nostalgie won the best short film live action honor at the Irish Film and Television Awards. It is also a BAFTA nominee and an Oscar-qualified entry. Ferguson, who previously directed the documentaries Nothing Compares and Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes, is currently in production on her next project, Matrescence.
The film will enter the awards season with its IFTA victory and BAFTA nomination already secured. It competes in the live action short category alongside other international entries. The release schedule for the film has not been detailed in the announcement, but its awards eligibility is confirmed for the current cycle.
