Apple has significantly increased its manufacturing targets for the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable smartphone. According to new supply chain reports, the tech giant boosted its production orders by more than 40 percent. This major shift in strategy is a direct response to the overwhelming volume of customer interest that has characterized the launch period.

The numbers behind this expansion are substantial. Originally, Apple planned to ship 9.7 million units of the device over the first 12 months. That figure has now been raised to 14 million. This jump of more than four million units indicates that executives expect the strong demand seen in the initial days to persist throughout the coming year. The rapid adjustment in targets suggests that the initial hesitation over whether the slow start was due to poor supply or high demand has been resolved in favor of the latter.

The pre-order phase began on Friday and immediately revealed the scale of interest. Customers reported that delivery estimates extended into late January almost instantly after the purchase window opened. Apple attributed these delays to what it termed "extraordinary" demand. While the company frequently uses this phrase for new iPhone launches, the immediate impact on shipping schedules was notable. To manage the influx and combat potential scalping, Apple also implemented a limit of two units per customer.

As production ramps up, some early buyers are already seeing their estimated shipping dates move up. This aligns with the reported increase in manufacturing activity. However, the experience for initial users is not without challenges. Third-party applications are not yet fully optimized for the new hardware, a common hurdle for new form factors. Apple states that this situation is improving quickly as developers update their software to support the device's unique display configuration.

Early reviews based on a week of usage have highlighted app support as a key area of focus. Reviewers have also noted the switch to Touch ID for security, a departure from the Face ID system used in other recent models. Despite this, reports indicate that Apple is already testing prototypes for a second-generation iPhone Duo that may reintroduce Face ID technology. The company appears committed to refining the user experience as the product line expands.

The stakes for this device are high as Apple attempts to establish a foothold in the competitive foldable market. The rapid increase in shipment targets demonstrates confidence in the product's long-term viability. For consumers, the increased production should eventually lead to shorter wait times, although the initial wave of buyers will still navigate the early software ecosystem. The success of the iPhone Duo will likely determine the future of Apple's hardware diversification efforts.
