Sedona city officials confirmed on Sunday that 2,700 gallons of raw sewage entered Oak Creek near Bear Wallow Lane. The release began at approximately 9:45 a.m. when heavy rainfall flooded the local infrastructure.
The Bear Wallow Pump Station failed to manage the volume of water during the downpour. Officials stated that the pumps could not keep pace with the incoming flow rate, resulting in the spill.
Maintenance crews dispatched pumper trucks to the site to assist with the overflow. Normal operations at the station resumed around 11:15 a.m. The total duration of the spill was roughly 90 minutes.
This event marks the second sewage incident in Oak Creek within seven days. During the previous Sunday, an estimated 1,000 to 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered the creek. That earlier spill was contained within two hours and the area was disinfected. Crews traced that incident to a grease clog at a restaurant, which allowed wastewater to flow from a manhole into a storm drain.
Officials noted that they did not send notifications to residents on Sunday due to active evacuation efforts in the region. Water quality sampling has not yet been performed because of safety concerns at the site.
