Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Monday that the United States has not yet authorized the transfer of critical air defense missiles. He said Ukraine has waited for nearly a month for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to sign off on supplies for Patriot and NASAMS systems. Zelensky confirmed he ordered his team to contact American counterparts again to address the holdup.
The delay occurs as Russia increases attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure. Zelensky has urged the US to accelerate deliveries under the PURL program, where NATO allies purchase missiles for Ukraine. Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted a batch of interceptors may not have arrived. Rubio stated the delay was not driven by political reasons.
The missile wait adds to friction between the two nations. President Donald Trump recently announced a diesel deal with Russia and criticized Zelensky for not halting attacks on Russian refineries. Ukraine has also reported gaps in US intelligence sharing regarding Russian missile attacks in recent weeks.
Operational challenges extended to satellite communications. Ukraine reported that the military version of Starlink was throttled for several days. This disruption affected military operations and air defense capabilities. Reuters reported the order to limit Starshield access came from the White House. Both Elon Musk and US officials publicly stated that decisions on these limitations rested solely with the other party.
