Manatee County: Landfill Gas Becomes Fuel
A $50 million partnership in Florida will capture methane at the Lena Road Landfill to power local buses and trucks.

Residents of Manatee County may soon see their local buses running on gas derived from the Lena Road Landfill. The county has launched a $50 million project to convert landfill methane into renewable fuel for heavy vehicles. This marks the first facility of its kind on Florida's west coast.
The initiative aims to reduce emissions equivalent to removing 5.3 million gallons of gasoline from the road each year. Manatee County has partnered with Nopetro Energy, Johnson Controls, and Mead & Hunt for the build. Nopetro will construct the plant and manage its daily operations. The system captures methane, cleans it, and injects it into existing natural gas pipelines rather than building new infrastructure.
Project organizers state the facility will generate enough renewable energy to power more than 4,500 homes annually. They calculate the environmental benefit as comparable to planting 22,000 acres of forest. The primary customers for this fuel will be large vehicle fleets, including city buses and trucking companies. Nopetro argues that this methane-derived gas offers better climate performance than standard fossil fuels.
The team is currently moving the project from the design phase into construction. While the focus is on Manatee County, other regions are pursuing different waste management solutions. In Orange County, California, officials are deploying new technology to improve landfill cleanliness. A manufacturer has introduced the first hydrogen-powered garbage truck in the United States.
Researchers in Germany's Black Forest are converting wood waste into advanced fuel. Other innovators have developed methods to turn standard garbage into hydrogen for trucks and buses. Communities like Galena, Kansas, continue to manage landfill odors and safety concerns while testing these new approaches.
