Apple limits iPhone Duo screen with fixed sidebar
A permanent dock on the right edge consumes 15 percent of the 5.4-inch display, a design choice that differs from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 approach.

Apple's new foldable smartphone reduces the usable area of its 5.4-inch cover display by placing a permanent dock on the right side. This fixed element occupies 15 percent of the small screen, leaving less room for media and applications. The design choice contrasts with Samsung's current foldable strategy, which prioritizes a larger open display area for content.
Allison Johnson of The Verge noted that the iPhone Duo feels more difficult to handle with one hand than the Galaxy Z Fold 8. She observed that the Fold 8's taller and narrower physical shape makes its outer screen easier to navigate. For users who value a functional cover display, this ergonomic difference represents a tangible shift in daily usability.
The iPhone Duo implements the sidebar as a space-saving mechanism. The intent is to stretch media content so it appears taller, similar to the layout on a standard slab device. However, the fixed position of the dock creates a large unused section of the display. A post on Twitter/X illustrated the stark visual difference between the two phones.
In a video comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 was configured to use a navigation bar instead of gestures. This setup reduced the visual gap between the two devices. For users who rely on navigation gestures, the Fold 8 retains nearly the entire outer screen for main content. The iPhone Duo's layout, by contrast, permanently reserves that right-hand section for the dock.
Apple's first entry into the wide foldable category faces early criticism regarding software execution. While the hardware appears promising, the initial implementation of iOS leaves room for improvement. Samsung has refined Android for large screens over several years, creating a more established baseline for comparison. The iPhone Duo is currently available, though stock remains limited in many markets.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 continues to perform well for Samsung, demonstrating that a free-flowing display works effectively for many consumers. Apple's approach offers a different structural solution, but the cost is a measurable reduction in available screen real estate. The fixed sidebar remains a constant feature on the iPhone Duo's outer display.
