The seven major technology stocks that define the modern market no longer move in unison. The average rolling 60-day correlation of daily returns across all pairs in the group has dropped to its lowest level in more than ten years. This statistical break signals that investors are treating these mega-cap companies as distinct bets rather than a single cohesive trade.

Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, noted that the group members have different exposures to artificial intelligence. He argued this requires a granular approach to portfolio construction instead of owning the stocks wholesale. The shift has coincided with a performance gap between the group and the wider market. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF is up 7% in 2026, while the S&P 500 is up 12%.

Only Nvidia and Apple are currently outperforming the broader index. Tesla and Meta are the two members of the group down for the year. Thomas DiFazio, an ETF strategist at Roundhill Investments, said investors are now weighing independent fundamental growth drivers. They are focusing on micro factors such as Azure cloud growth for Microsoft and consumer AI applications for Meta.

Other specific drivers include Google Cloud, Gemini, and Search for Alphabet. Investors are also monitoring Amazon’s cloud growth and the durability of demand for Nvidia’s chips. Tesla’s narrative centers on AI, robotics, robotaxis, and a potential merger with SpaceX. Despite the divergence in stock prices, Wall Street remains largely bullish on the group’s fundamentals.

According to LSEG data, buy or strong buy ratings cover 58% of analysts on Apple and 50% on Tesla. Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia each hold 97% of such ratings. Alphabet and Meta have 92% and 89%, respectively. Apple has emerged as the group’s top performer in 2026 with a 28% gain. This marks a sharp reversal from last year, when it returned just 8.9% and placed second from the bottom.

Last year, Alphabet led the group with a 65.8% gain, while Amazon trailed with 5.2%. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, described Apple as the consistent tortoise of this race. Luria called it the place to hide from the AI trade. The stock was previously penalized for lower AI spending, but its device and services business has now gained traction.

Nvidia shares have been volatile amid concerns over chip demand and capital spending. The stock peaked on Oct. 6 and has fallen more than 13% since that date. Woods called the current valuation relatively and historically cheap. Amazon has shown steady growth, with its cloud unit expanding 37% year over year in the second quarter. That figure trails Azure’s 43% growth and Google Cloud’s 82%.

Meta’s stock rose in September on enthusiasm for its Muse AI assistant. It then turned lower after its third-quarter report showed negative free cash flow and a higher floor for full-year capital spending. Microsoft has recovered from fears that AI would disrupt its software business. Woods noted that the stock now faces resistance in the $530 to $550 range. Tesla, he said, has been left in the dust, with Luria noting its valuation carries an Elon premium. Microsoft and Alphabet report earnings after the bell Wednesday, and Amazon follows after the close on Thursday.
