Florida State University committed to a buyout payment exceeding $50 million on November 2 to terminate head coach Mike Norvell's contract. The termination follows a 36-24 loss to Clemson, which marked the end of Norvell's tenure midway through the 2026 season.
The financial obligation stems from an eight-year contract extension worth $84 million. Norvell secured that deal after an undefeated regular season in 2023, using interest from other programs as leverage. Administrators and major boosters determined the payout was necessary to reverse a trend of three consecutive losing stretches. The team dropped 17 of its final 21 matchups within the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Rick Stockstill, a former Middle Tennessee head coach currently serving on the FSU staff, assumes the role of interim head coach. He will guide the Seminoles through the remaining games of the 2026 schedule. The university is conducting parallel searches for a permanent athletic director and a new head coach. Board Chairman Peter Collins and school leadership are directing the administrative reset.
The $50 million expense limits the budget flexibility for immediate hires. However, the university intends to move quickly in the national market before the winter transfer portal window opens. Factors such as the program's brand recognition, upgraded stadium facilities, and access to elite recruiting talent keep the position attractive to top candidates.
Several high-profile coaches are expected to surface in the search. Manny Diaz, the current Duke head coach, is a primary target due to his recruiting ties in Florida and experience as a head coach. Jake Dickert of Wake Forest is also on the list, valued for his defensive mind and program culture. Buster Faulkner, an offensive play-caller with extensive Southeast recruiting links, is another option.
Rhett Lashlee, the SMU head coach and former Miami offensive coordinator, is considered for his ability to build fast-paced offenses. Kenny Dillingham, the Arizona State head coach and former FSU offensive coordinator under Norvell, is viewed as a rising star. Securing Dillingham would likely require another substantial financial commitment given his status at his alma mater.
