For high school fans in the East Metro, Friday night marked the official end of the regular season for Class 6A football. The evening delivered a mix of historic achievements and dramatic finishes, ranging from a program milestone in Roseville to a buzzer-beater upset in the southern suburbs.
Roseville emerged as the night’s top team, defeating Coon Rapids 24-14 to claim the Metro Maroon subdistrict championship. The Raiders finished their regular season with a 4-4 record, which is their best performance since 2017. Senior quarterback Chase Browning led the offense with 162 passing yards and three touchdown throws. Browning expressed his excitement about the team’s hard work finally yielding results, calling the victory an amazing feeling.
In another significant matchup, Centennial defeated Anoka 38-6. This win likely guarantees the Cougars a No. 3 seed in the upcoming playoffs and positions them as strong contenders for a deep run into November. The loss was notable for Anoka, as they allowed just six points, a team first for single-digit scoring this season.
Mounds View secured sole possession of the Metro East subdistrict title with a 22-16 victory over White Bear Lake. The game remained tight until the final minute, when quarterback Tanner Jude scored on a one-yard run with 65 seconds remaining. A successful two-point conversion extended the lead to six points. Mounds View defense capped the effort by intercepting a pass on White Bear Lake’s next possession, holding their quarterback Wyatt Stachowiak to just six completions on 24 attempts.
East Ridge concluded a season that likely did not meet expectations by beating rival Woodbury 42-31. Logan Tretter rushed for two touchdowns, while Elias Mather returned an interception for a late score that put the game out of reach.
Mack Jurkovich of Forest Lake was the standout individual performer of the night. He rushed for 245 yards and two touchdowns to help the Rangers defeat Stillwater 31-13. This result locks in a No. 2 seed for Forest Lake in the playoffs. Jurkovich, who has committed to St. Thomas, finished the regular season with 1,600 rushing yards.
Manny Vargas of Park also had a strong night, scoring twice in the Wolfpack’s 18-10 win over Eastview. He caught a touchdown pass and returned a punt 75 yards for another score. The most dramatic moment of the evening occurred in the south metro, where Lakeville South kicker Dylan Nelson hit a 36-yard field goal with one second left. This gave the Cougars a 17-14 upset over Rosemount and added complexity to the playoff seeding picture in that region.
