Apple TV subscribers in the United States gained access to Dolby Atmos audio for Formula 1 coverage starting Friday, October 23. The United States Grand Prix marks the first time a Formula 1 race has been broadcast in this spatial audio format. Apple and Dolby Laboratories confirmed the addition earlier this month, noting that the upgrade would begin with the current race weekend.
The company stated that the surround sound design places viewers inside the event. Audio tracks include team radio chatter, commentary, engine noise, and pit lane activity. Apple paired this audio upgrade with Dolby Vision, which provides high dynamic range imagery. The goal is to combine sharp visuals with immersive sound for fans watching at home.
Practice 1 has already concluded. Subscribers can watch the remaining sessions this weekend. Practice 2 airs on Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. Practice 3 is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying follows on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The main race is set for Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.
To celebrate the debut, Apple is hosting a live viewing party for the Sunday race. The event takes place at the Apple Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. This location also hosted Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien on Friday. They attended the launch event for the iPhone Duo at the same store.
Apple also updated its mapping services for the weekend. The company expanded its Detailed City Experience feature to include Austin. The new map displays the Circuit of The Americas with specific details. These features include turn numbers, grandstand locations, and 3D landmarks. The update helps fans navigate the venue more easily.
Apple TV is available for a monthly fee of $14.99. Customers can also access the service through the Apple One bundle. The platform offers a library of original content alongside live sports. Current titles on the service include Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
