Broken links on Apple Music's website now open a virtual version of the classic iPod. Visitors who reach a page-not-found screen see the message "give this a spin instead" below it. Following that prompt brings up an interactive iPod interface with a working click wheel and other controls.
Apple released the feature to mark 25 years since the original iPod was first shown. The company's original marketing for that device centered on carrying 1,000 songs in a pocket. The virtual version includes a library of 1,029 songs that can be played.
The interface carries the layout of the original, with sections for Playlists, Artists, Songs and Settings. Playback on any track stops at 90 seconds. The song list leans toward the early 2000s, with acts such as Baha Men, blink-182 and Eminem. Engadget's writer, who is based in the UK, also saw Daniel Bedingfield, The Fratellis and Klaxons, and said they were unsure whether the same names appear for users in the US.
The Brick game that shipped with the first iPod is also present, Notebook Check reported. It opens the same way as on the hardware: holding the center button on the About screen for a few seconds. Engadget found the controls respond but reported the experience as somewhat buggy. Its writer had trouble getting it to work at all on a desktop computer and recommended trying it on a phone or tablet, where the touch screen makes it feel more like the real thing. Apple Music did not respond to a request for comment. The virtual iPod does not require an active Apple Music account.
