The ongoing Ebola outbreak, which has claimed thousands of lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has now reached the most populous nation in Africa. Health authorities are currently investigating whether the virus jumped between countries through a shared transit point in Uganda.

Nigerian officials confirmed their first case in over ten years on Tuesday. The patient is the Ugandan-born wife of a diplomat based in Abuja. She returned to Nigeria earlier this month after visiting family in Uganda in September. Dr. Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that the woman is currently receiving treatment.

As a precaution, 44 individuals who had close contact with the patient have been placed in quarantine. Investigators are working to map the exposure route, a process complicated by the patient’s recent travel history. The focus has shifted to Entebbe International Airport in Uganda, a key hub for regional travel.

The investigation centers on a specific overlap in travel dates. The first confirmed patient in Kenya, who has since died, traveled from Congo to Kenya via Uganda. Both that patient and the Nigerian case were present at Entebbe on the same day. Mankoula noted that the Africa CDC is examining whether any interaction occurred between the two individuals during that time.

The geographic spread of the virus marks a shift in the outbreak's trajectory. Nigeria is the fourth African country to report a case in this current wave and the first in West Africa. The disease originated in eastern Congo in May and has since become the fastest spreading on record. The toll is substantial, with roughly 9,700 infections and at least 4,600 deaths recorded in the country of origin.

Uganda initially reported about 20 cases but was declared free of the virus in August. Kenya logged its first case in early October, followed by eight additional confirmations. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated objects. Symptoms typically include severe fever, and transmission usually occurs once a person becomes symptomatic.

The proximity of the airport to potential transmission routes remains under review. Officials continue to track the movement of individuals who passed through Entebbe during the window of exposure. The data collected will determine if additional travel restrictions or health screenings are required for travelers transiting through the region.
