Mbappe to Claim Ballon d'Or Despite Trophyless Season
The 2026 winner relies on a record 22 World Cup goals and La Liga scoring titles to break a decade-long trend requiring a major team trophy.

Kylian Mbappe has won the 2026 Ballon d'Or, a decision that breaks with a decade of precedent in which every recipient lifted at least one major trophy during the award cycle. The French forward accepted the prize on Monday at a ceremony in London, marking his first individual title of the highest caliber despite finishing the 2025-26 season without silverware at either the club or international level.
Mbappe’s case rested primarily on his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. He scored 22 goals in 22 matches to become the all-time leading scorer in the tournament’s history, surpassing Lionel Messi’s record of 21 and Miroslav Klose’s 16. He also won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. In a statement last month, Mbappe noted that overtaking the sport’s greatest legends in the most important competition was a defining achievement.
His club form supported the individual records. Playing for Real Madrid, Mbappe finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward stated that being the top scorer in all major competitions made the 2025-26 season a strong year for his candidacy.
The path to the award was not without context regarding team results. Real Madrid had a difficult campaign under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, finishing second in La Liga and falling to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This result extended Real Madrid’s run without a major trophy to a second straight season. At the international level, France finished fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.
Rival candidates presented stronger trophy cases. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga championship. Despite these achievements, the voting favored Mbappe’s individual statistical dominance.
Mbappe has remained confident in his bid, telling RFI radio that the award recognizes a player rather than a team. He argued that individual performance and eye-catching moments are the key factors for such a prize. His manager, Jose Mourinho, also supported the nomination, stating that history was made by a player who was not from PSG or the Spanish national team.
The result aligns with a rare historical exception. The last Ballon d'Or winner without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid in 2013. That year, Ronaldo scored 66 goals for club and country while Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs and Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Mbappe’s win ends a streak dating back to 2014 where winners, including Rodri and Ousmane Dembele, held major trophies.
This is Mbappe’s first Ballon d'Or after nine nominations. His most recent previous placement was third in 2023. The award carries no cash prize but serves to elevate a player’s market value and status. The 2026-27 season begins next, with Mbappe preparing for a new campaign with Real Madrid.
The ceremony took place in London on Monday evening. The vote was determined by a panel of journalists. Mbappe’s 22 World Cup goals stood as the central statistic cited by voters. The prize acknowledges the best player in the world over the past 12 months. Mbappe’s achievement marks the end of a cycle where team success was a prerequisite for the individual honor.
