Johnson Couple Opens Brunch & Bloom In Atascocita, Plans Baltimore Location

Kwan and Kia Johnson, married for 25 years, opened Brunch & Bloom in December 2025 to fill what they described as a void in the Atascocita area. "There was a gap so we just wanted to fill that void," Kwan Johnson said.

The restaurant serves breakfast, brunch and lunch with dishes including deep-fried smoked gouda grits, breakfast fried rice, and a BBLT that substitutes beef bacon for pork bacon. Executive Chef James Watford prepares vegan options and accommodates gluten sensitivities.

Before opening the restaurant, Kwan Johnson worked as a regional operations manager after medically retiring from the U.S. Army. Kia Johnson worked as a nurse practitioner. The couple has three children and has lived in the area for nearly 20 years. "Our kids go to these schools .. [and we've] always wanted to give back and I was just like 'Well, what better way?'" Kia Johnson said.

The dining room uses a shade of blue associated with autism awareness. One section of the restaurant plays music at a lower volume. "When families come in here with kids that require special attention and might be overstimulated, we try to sit them on that side of the restaurant .. that way the whole family can get out and enjoy and not worry about any disruptions," Kwan Johnson said.

The Johnsons partner with Humble ISD's culinary program and have donated meals to organizations and nonprofits. The restaurant also takes private event bookings and maintains a vendor network for clients.

Kia Johnson said community response has grown since opening. "Since we've opened, the love and support that we have gotten has been out of this world," she said. The couple plans to open additional Brunch & Bloom locations, including one in Baltimore, where they grew up.
