Annual Remembrance commemorations in Lincolnshire begin with a new visual display in the town of Grantham.
Four wooden silhouettes now stand outside the Guildhall Arts Centre. The figures represent a World War One soldier, a World War Two paratrooper, a Land Girl, and a member of the Women's Royal Naval Service. The Wren figure bears the name Joan Briggs, a local woman who served in the Navy during the Second World War.
Grantham Arts coordinated the project. College students researched local military history and painted the four distinct figures. The organization also held workshops to prepare for the installation.
A cascading display of poppies hangs alongside the wooden figures. The structure consists of hundreds of handmade poppies stitched onto military camouflage netting. This specific poppy installation first appeared in 2023 and remains a central part of the town's tribute to those who served.
A military march will take place in Grantham on 8 November. This event follows a Remembrance Sunday service at St Wulfram's Church. Elsewhere in the county, the Avro Lancaster Just Jane released thousands of poppies from beneath its wings at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre. This action marked the start of the county's poppy appeal. A service of remembrance is scheduled for the same date at the International Bomber Command Centre near Lincoln.
