First Lady’s Office Halts Oleshky Fighting for Six Days
Melania Trump claims sole credit for the truce, which begins Oct. 29 to allow aid delivery and evacuation of elderly residents.

The war in Ukraine has ground to a temporary halt in one specific corner of the country. On Friday, the office of First Lady Melania Trump announced a localized ceasefire for Oleshky, a city under Russian occupation in southern Ukraine. The arrangement pauses all military action in the city for six days, beginning Thursday, Oct. 29.
The stated goal is strictly humanitarian. Both nations will stop firing so that supplies can reach the population and a safe route can be established for civilians to leave. The first lady’s office credited Melania Trump alone with brokering the deal. She did not list President Trump or other senior officials as participants in the negotiations.
Her office said Mrs. Trump acted as the 'Exclusive Intermediary.' She started talks with both governments and aligned them on technical procedures, timing, and the terms of the pause. She worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define these conditions. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has issued a public statement confirming the details, though Ukrainian officials indicated a tentative agreement exists for the territory.
Mrs. Trump described the situation in Oleshky as dire. She said the city is on the brink of disaster and remains home to mostly elderly residents. These people need medicine, food, and clean water while living with limited electricity and regular attacks. She stated that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.
Under the plan, civilian leaders from both countries will visit homes to assess needs. Residents who choose to leave will receive coordinated transportation. Mrs. Trump said she expects some will go to Russia and others to Ukraine. She has also arranged for an American media organization to document the efforts. Newsmax, a conservative outlet, confirmed it will participate in the coverage.
Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, called the development 'amazing news.' He wrote on X that it was a major step toward peace and that history would remember the first lady's work. The announcement follows a call last week between Pope Leo and President Vladimir Putin, who expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis. Mrs. Trump has also reunited 34 children with their families since they were forcibly removed.
The truce arrives as President Trump’s broader peace efforts stall. He has recently voiced frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine needs a new leader. He told reporters earlier this week that Russia has been fine in Ukraine and that they have not been doing much.
