Disney has released a 15-title viewing list to help audiences prepare for the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18. Ticket presales for the movie have already surpassed $50 million. Marvel is using the list to guide viewers through a franchise that now includes 56 total entries.
The selected titles fall into three specific groups. The first group includes the original 2000 film X-Men and its 2003 sequel X2: X-Men United. This choice reflects the studio's integration of mutant characters into the main continuity. The second group covers multiverse mechanics through films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the series Loki. These entries explain the rules that will drive the Doomsday plot.
The final group consists of recent team-building stories. This includes Thunderbolts, Captain America: Brave New World, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Fantastic Four: First Steps. These projects introduce characters expected to fight alongside or against Doctor Doom. The list also revisits foundational stories such as The Avengers from 2012 and Avengers: Endgame from 2019.
Eduardo Arias, a media professor at the University of Miami, said the list serves a practical purpose for viewers. He noted that there is too much Marvel content for most people to watch in full. Arias stated, "A curated list helps fans focus on the stories that are relevant and makes the commitment feel more manageable." He added that understanding character history will make the major moments in the new film have a bigger payoff.
Ana Francois, a media management professor also at the University of Miami, viewed the list through a commercial lens. She described the approach as a marketing strategy intertwined with storytelling. Francois said the list provides a manageable entry point for casual viewers. This approach helps the studio address what fans often call Marvel fatigue by reducing the barrier to entry.
Social media has seen a surge in fans attempting to watch the entire catalog. David Alfonso, a TikTok creator, posted a video on Aug. 3, 2026, mocking the pressure to be fully caught up. His video has accumulated more than 10.6 million views. He is part of a larger trend where fans treat the release as a challenge to master the entire lore.
The official list allows viewers to skip the bulk of the franchise. It bridges the gap between the original X-Men films and the newest MCU entries. Disney is betting that 15 specific titles are enough to bring audiences back into the universe. The release date remains set for late December.
