Arlington County Board Raises Public EV Charging Rates by 72 Percent

Arlington County drivers will face a sharp increase in public electric vehicle charging costs beginning Nov. 1.

The County Board approved a rate adjustment that raises the base fee for slow chargers from 17.46 cents per kilowatt-hour to 30 cents per kilowatt-hour. This represents a 72 percent increase. Officials estimate the change will add roughly $5 to the cost of a full charging session.

Elijah Colson, an EV owner in the county, noted that the new price brings charging closer to the cost of gasoline. He said he typically spends between $9 and $10 to charge his vehicle. Colson stated that even with the increase, electricity remains cheaper than spending $40 on gas.

County leaders attributed the rate hike to rising installation costs and higher electricity prices. They cited demand from data centers and power grid upgrades as primary drivers of the increased energy costs. Shihyag, another EV owner, questioned why the rate increase was so substantial for all residents. Shihyag guessed that data centers were the cause, based on recent news reports.

The Arlington County Board stated that demand for EV chargers is growing in the region. The county currently operates 51 public EV charging locations.
