The Department of Defense is moving a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East. This deployment occurs while nearly 21 million Americans have already cast their ballots for the upcoming midterm elections. The move signals a shift in military posture ahead of the November 3 vote.
A source briefed on U.S. and Israeli planning told NPR that officials are preparing for a possible attack on Iran after the elections. The two nations are weighing a strike that could resume heavier fighting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that his country is ready for both diplomacy and war. He noted that Tehran is demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently traveled to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Greg Myre of NPR reported that President Trump is likely to decide on military action after the election. This timing aims to prevent a spike in oil prices before voters go to the polls. The administration believes a post-election strike would have less impact on the domestic economy.
The University of Florida’s Election Lab reports that 21 million Americans have voted by mail or in person. This number rose by about 2 million in a single day. Saige Miller of NPR noted that early voting in key battleground states is running higher than in the last midterm cycle. Democrats are voting early at higher rates than Republicans. Unaffiliated voters are also participating at elevated levels.
Miller cautioned that early figures do not guarantee final results. Republicans tend to turn out on Election Day, while Democrats prefer to vote early. Separately, a federal judge in California is restricting pre-election field operations by the Department of Homeland Security. The agency says these efforts aim to identify noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally in nine states.
A federal magistrate judge ruled that President Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation case against the BBC. The judge ordered him to comply with court rules or face sanctions. The lawsuit centers on a Panorama broadcast from late October 2024 that allegedly edited his January 6 speech to make it seem he incited a violent siege of Congress. BBC attorneys say more than 200 defendants in January 6 cases have said the speech motivated them.
Grocery prices remain a focus for voters. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85 percent increase over the last decade. Eggs fell to $2.27 per dozen after hitting a record high of $6.23 in March 2025. Butter averaged $3.96 in September, down 17.3 percent from a year earlier due to oversupply. Coffee prices remain 44 percent higher than two years ago despite the removal of tariffs on the bean.
