Former President Barack Obama told a crowd in Ohio on Saturday that the United States is facing a two trillion dollar price tag for the war in Iran. He argued that the conflict was unnecessary and unrequested, placing the financial burden squarely on the current administration.

The criticism came during a midterm campaign rally supporting Democratic candidates in the state. Obama described the past two years as marked by chaos, cruelty, corruption, and incompetence. He urged voters to use the upcoming election to end what he called a modern era of poor decision-making.

The rally also addressed a contentious gubernatorial race between Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. A recent attack ad featured Donna Arthur, Acton’s mother, disputing her daughter’s account of childhood homelessness and sexual abuse by a stepfather. Acton stated she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother supported the account of abuse by the stepfather, who was charged with rape and died in 2004.

Obama defended Acton, noting that she has spoken movingly about her painful childhood experiences, including abuse, neglect, and homelessness. He criticized Ramaswamy for crossing every line and sinking to new lows in his campaign tactics. The former president said the standards of behavior had dropped so low that such an advertisement was possible.

Sherrod Brown, the former Democratic senator, shared the stage with Obama and Acton. Brown is seeking a comeback bid against incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted. Polls currently show Democrats holding a slight lead in both the gubernatorial and senatorial races, though results are expected to be close.

The event highlighted the financial and social stakes of the November elections for Ohio voters. Obama’s remarks focused on the cost of foreign policy and the conduct of local candidates.
