Al Jazeera Balkans officially relaunched on Sunday, November 1, marking the return of the news outlet to the region after it ceased operations in 2025. The new iteration operates as a digital-first platform, moving away from traditional broadcast models to focus on web and social media delivery.
The outlet originally began broadcasting in 2011. It stopped publishing content in 2025 before initiating a comeback in the weeks leading up to the official relaunch. During this interim period, the team published updates on major regional events, including elections in Serbia and protests in Albania. Their content generated approximately 100 million views across social media channels during that timeframe.
Jamal Elshayyal, the Director of Digital News Content and Languages at Al Jazeera, described the launch as a return to the network's core mission. He stated that the Balkans often receives global attention only during major crises. "Behind the headlines are societies in transformation, communities shaped by extraordinary resilience, and people asking to be heard," he said. He added that the new format aims to serve as a window from the region to the rest of the world.
The new platform features a dedicated "Balkans" section on the main website. Users can access news from specific countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. The editorial team will also cover the Balkan diaspora in Germany, the United States, and other nations.
The production strategy emphasizes short-form videos and explainers. These pieces are designed to provide quick context on regional and global developments. The outlet is also introducing podcasts to its lineup. This approach allows the team to deliver key information in formats suitable for mobile devices.
Audiences can access the new service through the digital portal at balkans.aljazeera.net. The outlet maintains a presence on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X, and Threads. This multi-platform distribution replaces the previous television broadcast model entirely.
